Just like you, your plants are starting to plan for the cool temperatures of fall and the cold weather of winter. Each fall, warm and cool season plants go through a "hardening off" phase and begin storing nutrients to make it through the winter freeze. Here are a few steps to give your turf and plant material the best opportunity to come out of winter ready for spring.
- Take a soil sample. Your plants can't tell you what they need. Sample the soil to determine what nutrients to add.
- Don't use fertilizers high in nitrogen. Nitrogen encourages plant growth, which is not ideal heading into winter. Do you give your kids candy before they go to bed each night?
- Try a calcium or potassium treatment. These nutrients help the plant harden off for winter. This is our milk and bananas approach!
Fall is a great time of year! Don't forget to keep the leaves off your turf so the sun can reach it. Enjoy your pumpkin spice and watch a couple football games! Don't forget to keep it green!
